From: Minneapolis, MN
Number of Recipes: 400

Special Features: We created this cookbook as part of our year-long celebration of our church’s 125th anniversary. It includes information about the 125th anniversary events and the many food-related social and service activities regularly held at our church. There is also a brief history of both St. Lawrence Church and the Newman Center and their relationship over the years; in 1998 the Newman Center was merged back with St. Lawrence, and we became St. Lawrence Catholic Church and Newman Center. The cookbook includes some recipes from a previous parish cookbook and also from a collection of recipes from a graduate student and young adult group that was particularly active a few years ago. We chose a cover that is maroon and gold – the colors of the University of Minnesota – and personalized it with a photo of the church. A unique feature of our cookbook is that we have included a brief description of each recipe contributor so you can get a sense of the wonderful people who are part of the St. Lawrence - Newman community.

Description: Representing cooking wisdom across generations and cultures, our 400 recipes come from long-time parishioners, university students, and families of all ages in-between. They reflect the diversity of our parish, which serves the local S E Minneapolis neighborhood, the University of Minnesota and Dinkytown, as well as the broader Twin Cities community. Another beauty of the cookbook is that many of the recipes are incredibly easy, making it the perfect gift for the novice cook to the more expert cook.

Funds raised support: Our 125th anniversary year will conclude with a Mass celebrated by Archbishop Nienstedt followed by a celebration dinner, and a three-day presentation of Luke Live!, a parish mission/retreat with Fr. James Di Luzio, C S P, who brings the Gospel of Luke alive through stories, hymns, songs and preaching. Cookbook proceeds will help offset the cost of these events, as well as funding other parish needs.

Favorite Recipe

Mom's Chinese Spaghetti
By: Fr. Ivan Tou, C S P, Pastor of St. Lawrence - Newman

  • Spaghetti noodles
  • Soy sauce
  • Sesame seed oil
  • Garlic powder

Boil a bunch of spaghetti noodles. Strain and rinse out the starch. It's no fun if the noodles are one large clump and cannot be eaten individually. Add soy sauce. Season to taste, but make sure the noodles are a nice, healthy, tan brown. It's tanning without the fear of cancer. Add sesame seed oil. Season to taste. This gives the noodles that exotic flavor that you're far away in some tropical island without a care in the world. Add garlic powder. Season to taste. You can't get enough garlic to add zest and pizzazz to your life. Plus it keeps away those bugs that try to make you and your loved ones sick. Enjoy! Note: This is a childhood favorite that my mom would make really fast, that my brothers, my sister, and I loved to eat. You can never go wrong with noodles because they are so much fun to eat. Plus one should eat long noodles on one's birthday in the Chinese tradition for long life.
