Grandma Hatzenbihler Sugar Kuchen
By: Cecelia Hatzenbihler - 12 eggs, beaten
- 4 cups sugar
- 4 to 5 cups lard*
- Flour
- 4 tsp. soda
- 1 quart sour cream
- 2 Tbsp ground star anise
- 2 Tbsp vanilla
- 4 round tsp baking powder
-
- Topping
- 2 cups cookie or bread crumbs
- 2 cups sugar
- 2 tbsp ground anise
- 1 cup butter
Dissolve soda in the cream. Add cream and sugar to the beaten eggs. Add the lard and vanilla. Mix in the anise. Add enough flour (baking powder is added with the flour) to make a stiff dough to roll; chill. Roll very thin, cookie sheet size. Put dough into cookie sheet. Pour melted butter over the rest of topping ingredients; mix. Sprinkle some on top of each batch of kuchen dough. Bake at 375 degrees until edges are slightly browned ( 8 to 10 minutes). Cut into squares immediately after removing from the oven. Remove from pan and cool. *shortening may be used (5 cups), but lard works better. **anise you grind yourself. Has a much better flavor. You may use oil of anise (2 teaspoons). |
